Berbeda dengan karbon yang tersimpan di hutan daratan atau karbon hijau (<em>green carbon<\/em>), karbon biru sebagian besar tersimpan di dalam sedimen atau tanah bawah air. Kondisi ini memungkinkan karbon tetap tersimpan selama ratusan hingga ribuan tahun sehingga menjadikan ekosistem pesisir sebagai salah satu penyerap karbon alami yang paling efektif dalam membantu mitigasi perubahan iklim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"text-justify wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Mangrove, Contoh Nyata Ekosistem Karbon Biru<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"text-justify wp-block-paragraph\">Di antara berbagai ekosistem karbon biru, hutan mangrove merupakan contoh yang paling dikenal. Mangrove tumbuh di kawasan pesisir yang dipengaruhi pasang surut air laut dan memiliki sistem perakaran yang kuat sehingga mampu beradaptasi pada lingkungan dengan kadar garam yang tinggi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"text-justify wp-block-paragraph\">Melalui proses fotosintesis, mangrove menyerap karbon dioksida (CO\u2082) dari atmosfer untuk mendukung pertumbuhannya. Karbon tersebut tidak hanya tersimpan pada batang, daun, dan akar, tetapi juga terakumulasi di dalam sedimen di bawah tegakan mangrove. Ketika bagian tumbuhan, seperti daun, ranting, atau akar, gugur dan mati, material organik akan tertimbun di dalam sedimen yang miskin oksigen. Akibatnya, proses penguraian berlangsung sangat lambat sehingga karbon dapat terkunci selama ratusan bahkan ribuan tahun, selama ekosistem mangrove tetap terjaga.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"text-justify wp-block-paragraph\">Selain mangrove, padang lamun dan rawa pasang surut juga berperan penting sebagai penyimpan karbon biru. Ketiga ekosistem ini bekerja secara alami menyerap karbon sekaligus menjaga keseimbangan ekosistem pesisir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"text-justify wp-block-paragraph\">Berkat mekanisme tersebut, ekosistem pesisir mampu menyerap dan menyimpan karbon hingga 10 kali lebih cepat per hektare dibandingkan hutan tropis daratan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"text-justify wp-block-paragraph\">Keberadaan karbon biru memberikan manfaat yang jauh lebih luas daripada sekadar mengurangi emisi gas rumah kaca.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"text-justify wp-block-paragraph\">Hutan mangrove berfungsi sebagai benteng alami yang membantu melindungi garis pantai dari abrasi, meredam energi gelombang, mengurangi dampak badai, serta membantu menghadapi kenaikan muka air laut. Sementara itu, padang lamun berperan sebagai penyaring alami yang menangkap sedimen dan polutan sehingga kualitas air laut tetap terjaga dan mendukung kesehatan ekosistem di sekitarnya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"text-justify wp-block-paragraph\">Ekosistem pesisir juga menjadi habitat sekaligus kawasan pembesaran (<em>nursery ground<\/em>) bagi berbagai jenis ikan, kepiting, kerang, penyu, burung laut, dan biota lainnya. Selain itu, perusahaan juga melakukan penebaran puluhan ribu benih kerang dan kepiting sebagai bagian dari upaya memulihkan fungsi ekologis kawasan pesisir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"text-justify wp-block-paragraph\">Berdasarkan hasil estimasi, kawasan rehabilitasi tersebut memiliki potensi simpanan karbon sekitar 2.044 ton karbon (C) atau setara dengan 7.503 ton karbon dioksida (CO\u2082).
