In the forest, the canopy is more than just a collection of branches. For primates, it is a vital pathway—where they move, forage, and interact without descending to the ground. Yet when landscapes change, this connectivity is often disrupted.

At the Martabe Gold Mine, operated by Agincourt Resources, such changes have been recognised from the outset as risks to be managed, rather than avoided. From this awareness emerged a simple yet impactful solution: arboreal bridges.

These bridges, constructed from ropes, reconnect fragmented forest patches. Their purpose is clear—to provide safe passage for primates to move without descending to the ground, thereby reducing risks from vehicular activity while maintaining essential intergroup interactions that support genetic continuity. More than mere connectors, these structures form part of a broader effort to preserve ecological balance.

To date, eight arboreal bridges have been installed across six operational areas at Martabe, including TMF East, WPP, Road 03, CH 2100, DNX, and Barani. Their design is far from arbitrary. Every element—from materials and curvature to rope tension—is carefully considered to align with the movement patterns of different primate species.

Some bridges utilise natural fibres such as coconut coir, offering an environmentally friendly option, while others employ synthetic materials to ensure greater durability against weather conditions. The approach remains straightforward: adaptive to wildlife needs while grounded in operational realities.

To ensure their effectiveness, Agincourt Resources has conducted ongoing monitoring using camera traps installed on the arboreal bridges since 2023. The findings reveal insights beyond mere usage data.

The cameras capture not only frequency of use but also behavioural patterns. Some primates initially show hesitation before gradually adapting. Others have even been observed playing on the bridges—an indication that these structures are increasingly accepted as part of their habitat.

Monitoring has also informed design improvements. For instance, larger primates require wider rope spans to maintain balance. In terms of materials, coconut coir has proven to be environmentally friendly and sufficiently robust, although it is less resilient to extreme weather compared to synthetic alternatives.

From a biodiversity perspective, six primate species have been recorded using these bridges—three classified as endangered and one as vulnerable according to the IUCN: Presbytis sumatrana, Macaca nemestrina, Macaca fascicularis, Trachypithecus cristatus, Hylobates agilis, and Nycticebus coucang.

Interestingly, each location demonstrates distinct usage dynamics. This suggests that while levels of activity may vary, all bridges are functional and utilised.

Ultimately, these arboreal bridges are more than small-scale infrastructure within a mining area. They represent a broader approach—one in which operational activities can coexist with efforts to safeguard wildlife. At the Martabe Gold Mine, sustainability extends beyond planning. It is realised through tangible solutions, even those that may appear simple. Because preserving forest connectivity means sustaining the life within it.

The renovation was carried out due to approximately 80% of the district office roof being damaged, which had disrupted public service activities. This improvement is expected to support the performance of district officials in carrying out their governance, development, and village and sub-district administrative functions more effectively.

At the same location, a fire station was also constructed as a standby facility to accelerate emergency response in the event of fires. Previously, two fire response units (motorised tricycles) had no permanent base of operations. The Head of Muara Batang Toru District, Sonita Wardah Nasution, expressed her appreciation to Agincourt Resources for the support provided. She hopes these facilities will enhance the quality of public services and strengthen the response to potential emergencies.

Through this initiative, Agincourt Resources reaffirms its commitment to supporting essential infrastructure and building community resilience in a sustainable manner.

Have we ever truly taken the time to observe the forest?

At one moment, tender green shoots begin to emerge. Soon after, bursts of yellow blossoms color the canopy, eventually giving way to ripened fruits. These shifts are not merely routine cyclesthey are nature’s way of communicating.

Signals of seasons.
Signals of life.
And for many species, including the orangutan, they are essential to survival.

Behind these changes lies a science that helps us interpret them: phenology.

Phenology examines how plants and wildlife respond to environmental variations ranging from sunlight and temperature to humidity. From this, we gain a fundamental insight: ecosystems operate through highly precise interconnections.

From Knowledge to Action

For Agincourt Resources, phenology is more than theory it is a foundation for decision-making.

In post-mining rehabilitation, phenological data guides the optimal timing for seed collection and plant propagation. This ensures that land restoration is not carried out arbitrarily but aligned with the forest’s natural rhythms.

More importantly, phenology plays a critical role in understanding the wildlife within these ecosystems including the Tapanuli orangutan, a species highly dependent on natural food availability.

As an arboreal and primarily frugivorous species, orangutans spend most of their lives in trees, relying on fruits, young leaves, and other plant parts. When trees fail to fruit, their food sources are directly impacted.

This is where phenology becomes essential: enabling us to identify when and where food resources are available.

Collaboration for Conservation

To strengthen these efforts, Agincourt Resources collaborates with the Faculty of Forestry at the University of North Sumatra (USU) to train field teams in phenological observation and application.

The training integrates classroom learning with field practice covering theoretical foundations, observation techniques, data analysis, and occupational safety. Beyond training, the team has established permanent monitoring plots in areas that serve as orangutan habitats.

Selected tree species, such as Ficus and Dipterocarpus, are critical food sources for orangutans. Each tree is carefully tagged and monitored monthly tracking the development of young leaves, flowers, and fruit.

Observations are conducted systematically and quantitatively. The resulting data represents more than numbers it provides a real-time narrative of forest dynamics.

Maintaining Balance, Beyond Monitoring

Through this data, the team can map patterns of natural food availability for orangutans throughout the year. This forms a critical basis for biodiversity management ensuring that habitats continue to sustain wildlife populations.

This effort is reinforced through:

Routine monthly monitoring by trained teams

Expansion of observation plots in strategic areas

Strengthened collaboration with academic institutions

All directed toward a single objective: sustaining ecological balance.

Learning from Nature, Acting with Responsibility

Phenology teaches a simple yet profound lesson: nature is constantly communicating—if we choose to listen.

For Agincourt Resources, interpreting these signals is part of a broader commitment: ensuring that operational activities coexist with the preservation of surrounding ecosystems. Because ultimately, sustainability is not only about today but about ensuring that nature continues to signal life for generations to come.

As a form of commitment to road safety, Agincourt Resources, in collaboration with Astra Motor, organised a “Safety Riding Simulator Training” on Thursday, 9th April 2026 at Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan Negeri (SMKN) 2 Padangsidimpuan. The activity involved approximately 50 participants, consisting of the school principal, teachers, and students.

The Safety Riding Instructor from Astra Honda Motor, Noval Yunaidi, accompanied the activity. Meanwhile, the Marketing Communication Sub Department Head of Astra Motor, Michael Gerald, stated that this facility is expected to be utilised optimally by the community through schools in order to help reduce traffic accident rates.

The Principal of SMKN 2 Padangsidimpuan expressed appreciation and gratitude to Agincourt Resources and Astra Motor for the trust given to the school as the recipient of the safety riding programme. The school is committed to maintaining and utilising the facility in a sustainable manner, not only for students of SMKN 2 Padangsidimpuan, but also for other schools in Padangsidimpuan and South Tapanuli Regency, thereby increasing awareness of the importance of road safety.

The training also provided support in the form of safety riding facilities and infrastructure. The safety riding facility, which was handed over on 17 December 2025, is now utilised as an interactive learning medium, enabling participants to directly experience safe and controlled riding simulations. This facility is one of the limited ones available in Indonesia, and its presence in Padangsidimpuan City, North Sumatra, is expected to provide broader benefits, not only for SMKN 2 Padangsidimpuan, but also for other schools through educational activities.

Indonesia is widely recognized as one of the world’s mega biodiversity countries, home to hundreds of amphibian and reptile species. While often overlooked, these animals play a critical role in maintaining ecosystem balance.

At the Martabe Gold Mine, their presence is more than just scientific data it reflects environmental health. Amphibians and reptiles, collectively known as herpetofauna, have distinct characteristics. Amphibians live both in water and on land, while reptiles are better adapted to drier environments. What they share, however, is sensitivity to environmental change. This makes them reliable bioindicators natural signals of ecosystem quality.

In the Tailing Management Facilities (TMF) area, herpetofauna monitoring is carried out regularly as part of Martabe’ s commitment to responsible mining. For Agincourt Resources, sustainability is not just a principle, but a continuous process of measurement and improvement.

Field observations are conducted during both day and night, along natural trails spanning 1–2 kilometers across terrestrial and aquatic habitats. This approach allows the team to directly observe species presence and better understand the microhabitats that support them.

The survey recorded a total of 29 species, consisting of 13 reptile species and 16 amphibian species. This indicates that the area continues to support a range of biodiversity, although diversity levels vary across observation paths.

One observation path showed higher diversity, supported by better microhabitat conditions. The presence of streams, stable water sources, and abundant insect populations creates an ideal environment for herpetofauna. Additionally, humidity levels ranging from 80% to 83% provide optimal conditions, especially for amphibians that rely on moisture to survive.

This highlights a simple but important insight: when habitats are maintained, life will thrive.

For Agincourt Resources, protecting biodiversity is about more than conserving species it is about sustaining ecosystem balance. Because ultimately, the success of a mining operation is not only measured by production, but by how well the surrounding environment continues to function.

And within the forests of Martabe Gold Mine, herpetofauna remain a quiet reminder that nature always speaks if we are willing to listen.

In order to enhance worship facilities and support the spiritual comfort of police personnel as well as visiting members of the public, Agincourt Resources collaborated with the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) to construct the Al-Muhtadin Mosque at the South Tapanuli Police Headquarters (Mapolres Tapanuli Selatan). This initiative represents a form of concern for the need for proper and representative worship facilities within the police environment.

The handover of the mosque construction was carried out on 1st April 2026 at the South Tapanuli Police Headquarters, Sipirok. The event was marked by the signing of the Handover of Assistance Minutes and a symbolic handover represented by Masdar Muda, Manager of Community Relations at Agincourt Resources, to the South Tapanuli Police Headquarters.

Social media has become an integral part of everyday life, from sharing information and promoting businesses to seeking entertainment. However, irresponsible use of social media can pose risks such as the spread of misinformation (hoaxes), cyberbullying, and digital addiction. It is therefore essential for young people to use social media in a smart, responsible, and critical manner.

Through its Martabe Goes to School (MGTS) programme, Agincourt Resources organised an educational session themed “Using Social Media Wisely” on 31st March 2026 at SMK Negeri 1 Batang Toru. The activity was attended by 150 participants, comprising 130 students and 20 teachers.

In her opening remarks, Senior Supervisor Community Service, Nurhanifah Pulungan, stated that MGTS reflects Agincourt Resources’ commitment to promoting quality education through knowledge- and skills-sharing sessions with students.

During the session, Senior Supervisor Media Relations and Content Management Specialist, Gloria Natalia Dolorosa, together with Senior Supervisor Campaign and Event Management, Tia Manurung, highlighted the importance of using social media responsibly. In addition to explaining both the positive and negative impacts of social media, the speakers also shared practical ways to identify and counter misinformation commonly found across platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and X.

To ensure the session was engaging and interactive, participants also took part in a mini workshop on creating educational content, covering everything from developing content themes and visual ideas to crafting effective calls to action. This was complemented by interactive games designed to help participants distinguish between hoax and factual content, sharpening their ability to navigate the overwhelming flow of information on social media. The participants showed great enthusiasm throughout the approximately two-hour session. “This activity has given me new insights into how to use social media wisely. I am now more critical of the information I receive and feel motivated to use social media as a positive and creative platform. Thank you to Agincourt Resources for this valuable knowledge,” said Nadia Putri Hutagalung, an 11th-grade student of SMK Negeri 1 Batang Toru.

Beneath the seemingly still soil lies a world of life working in silence. One such presence is mycorrhiza, a soil-dwelling fungus that forms a close association with plant roots in a symbiotic mutualism—a relationship in which both organisms benefit.

Mycorrhiza attaches itself to plant roots and enhances the plant’s ability to absorb water and essential nutrients from the soil. In return, the plant supplies carbohydrates produced through photosynthesis as a source of energy for the fungus. This relationship creates a system of mutual dependence and reinforcement.

The role of mycorrhiza extends beyond a single plant. Through a network of fine thread-like structures known as hyphae, it expands the reach of roots into soil spaces that would otherwise be inaccessible. This network also enables the exchange of nutrients and chemical signals between plants, forming a natural communication system beneath the ground.

Read Also: The Use of Mycorrhiza Improves Reclamation Quality in the Martabe Gold Mine Area

In general, mycorrhiza can be classified into two main types. The first is ectomycorrhiza, which forms a sheath around the surface of plant roots. The second is arbuscular mycorrhiza, also known as endomycorrhiza, which penetrates root tissues and is commonly found in tropical regions, particularly in degraded land.

In the context of mining, post-mining land typically experiences a decline in quality, including low nutrient content, poor soil structure, and limited water retention capacity. These conditions present significant challenges for land rehabilitation and revegetation.

This is where mycorrhiza plays a vital role as a nature-based solution. Its capabilities help to:

Improve the uptake of essential nutrients such as phosphorus and nitrogen,

Enhance plant resilience to drought and extreme environmental conditions,

Improve soil structure, enabling better retention of water and air, and

Increase the success rate of plant establishment in rehabilitated areas.

The application of mycorrhiza is commonly carried out through inoculation, which involves introducing mycorrhiza to plant seedlings at the nursery stage. In this way, plants develop a beneficial partnership early in their growth, making them better prepared to adapt once planted in the field. Additionally, mycorrhiza can be applied as a biofertiliser mixed directly into the soil.

Findings from various studies, including those conducted in the Martabe Gold Mine area, indicate that mycorrhiza not only thrives in natural forests but can also establish itself in nutrient-poor reclaimed land. Its presence has been shown to accelerate plant growth and support the restoration of biodiversity. Mycorrhiza may not be visible to the eye, yet its role is profoundly real. It is a silent force that sustains life, a quiet ally that strengthens roots, and an essential part of maintaining ecological balance particularly in restoring life to once-degraded land.

In mining operations, land clearing is often required for various purposes, such as infrastructure development, exploration activities, and the expansion of mining facilities. However, this process must be carried out in a planned and responsible manner. At Martabe Gold Mine, every land disturbance activity is controlled through the Land Access Disturbance Request (LADR) procedure.

LADR is an internal company approval mechanism that ensures any activity with the potential to disturb land is conducted in accordance with applicable permits while also considering environmental protection. Through this procedure, the area proposed for clearing is first verified to ensure alignment with environmental documents such as the Environmental Impact Assessment (AMDAL – Analisis Mengenai Dampak Lingkungan) and its supporting documents.

In addition, every LADR submission undergoes evaluation by management and the environmental team. This process ensures that the proposed land disturbance area is strictly aligned with operational requirements and that all potential environmental risks have been identified and properly managed from the outset.

Biodiversity Management and Mitigation Hierarchy Implementation

Another important aspect of this procedure is the protection of biodiversity. The operational area of Martabe Gold Mine is located near the Batang Toru ecosystem, which is known for its high biodiversity and serves as a habitat for various protected wildlife species. Therefore, before any land clearing takes place, the company requires a pre-clearing survey, an initial assessment conducted to identify the presence of important flora and fauna within the proposed area.

In addition to the preliminary survey, a field inspection is conducted no later than 24 hours before land clearing activities begin. The team carries out a direct inspection to ensure that no protected wildlife—such as orangutans, tigers, pangolins, or hornbills—are present in the area. If any indication of these species is found, land clearing activities must be temporarily halted until the situation is confirmed to be safe.

This approach is aligned with the mitigation hierarchy principle in environmental management, which prioritises avoiding impacts, minimising habitat disturbance, and rehabilitating areas that have already been affected. At Martabe Gold Mine, areas that are no longer in use are rehabilitated through land reshaping, soil quality improvement, and replanting with local plant species.

Through the implementation of the LADR procedure, all land disturbance activities at Martabe Gold Mine are carried out in a controlled and well-documented manner while maintaining a strong commitment to environmental sustainability in the surrounding operational area.
