Mining operations are not only associated with natural resource management but also involve a responsibility to protect the surrounding environment. One of these commitments is demonstrated by Agincourt Resources through the management of domestic waste generated from employee activities and supporting facilities, such as office areas and the Mess Hall (employee dining facilities).

Agincourt Resources has implemented an integrated domestic waste management system through waste segregation, the recovery of reusable materials, and the processing of organic waste into compost. These efforts aim to reduce the amount of waste sent to final disposal facilities while supporting the implementation of circular economy principles within operational areas.

Waste Sortation Facility, a Centre for Domestic Waste Segregation

One of the facilities supporting domestic waste management at the Martabe Gold Mine is the Waste Sortation Facility (WSF). This facility serves as a centre for sorting waste based on its type, including organic waste, recyclable materials, and residual waste requiring further handling.

Through this segregation process, previously mixed waste can be managed according to its characteristics. Materials that still have value can be recovered and reused, while organic waste is processed into products with added value. The implementation of this waste segregation system is also supported by employee awareness in disposing of waste according to the designated categories. Individual involvement plays an important role in ensuring that waste management processes are carried out effectively.

Turning Organic Waste into Compost

In addition to waste segregation, Agincourt Resources also processes organic waste, particularly food waste such as fruit and vegetable scraps, into compost. Through the composting process, organic waste undergoes natural decomposition to produce compost that can be reused.

The utilisation of organic waste into compost provides environmental benefits by reducing the volume of waste sent to final disposal facilities. The compost produced is also used to support greening activities and environmental maintenance around the Martabe Gold Mine operational areas.

Supporting the Implementation of a Circular Economy

Domestic waste management through WSF and compost processing forms part of the implementation of circular economy principles at the Martabe Gold Mine. Through the reduce, reuse, and recycle (3R) approach, Agincourt Resources optimises the utilisation of materials so they do not immediately become waste but can continue to provide additional benefits.

This practice demonstrates that waste management is not solely focused on final disposal but also on how materials can be managed and utilised in a more responsible manner.

Together, Maintaining the Sustainability of the Martabe Gold Mine

Effective waste management requires the involvement of all parties within the operational area. Through the habit of segregating waste, reducing the use of single-use materials, and supporting the established waste management system, everyone can contribute to protecting the environment.

With the implementation of ongoing domestic waste management practices, Agincourt Resources continues to demonstrate its commitment to conducting mining operations that are productive, responsible, and aligned with sustainability principles.

Batang Toru, June 30, 2026 – A total of 10,000 ecobrick bottles created through community participation have now been transformed into the Ecobrick Park in Sopo Daganak, Batang Toru, South Tapanuli, North Sumatra. This initiative by PT Agincourt Resources has successfully diverted 2.5 tonnes of plastic waste while promoting a community-based waste management culture, marking the closing of the company’s series of activities commemorating World Environment Day 2026.

Damai Mendrofa, Chair of the Yamantab Waste Bank, stated that the achievement of producing 10,000 ecobricks is tangible evidence that community habits can be changed gradually. This milestone represents the first achievement of the “From the Heart for the Earth” Ecobrick Program, launched by PT Agincourt Resources (PTAR) in 2025.

“Previously, household plastic waste was simply discarded. Now, community members collect it, sort it, and pack it into ecobricks. The result is something we can all see today: a park that can be enjoyed by the community,” said Damai during the official opening of the Ecobrick Park in Batang Toru, South Tapanuli, on Tuesday (June 30, 2026).

Beyond serving as the foundation of the park, thousands of the ecobricks have also been utilized as signage for Martabe Cocoa and Martabe Farm—PT Agincourt Resources’ local economic development initiatives located near Sopo Daganak.

This plastic waste collection and ecobrick production initiative involved the Yamantab Waste Bank and four other local waste banks in Batang Toru: Gocap, Satahi, Naposo Hamubaon, and Rap Hita Paias.

Katarina Siburian Hardono, Senior Manager Corporate Communications of PT Agincourt Resources, described the Ecobrick Park as a symbol of the circular economy principles that the company seeks to build together with local communities. Local waste banks have been actively involved in the initiative, with three of them are currently partners in the company’s community development program.

“The Ecobrick Park is more than just the result of plastic waste management; it is proof that meaningful change can begin with simple actions taken collectively. For us, the success of this program is measured not only by the number of ecobricks collected, but also by the growing awareness and habits within the community to manage waste independently and sustainably,” she said.

Communities Take Part in Environmental Monitoring

In addition to engaging communities in environmental conservation efforts, PTAR also encourages community participation in environmental monitoring. Within the conservation areas, a 14-member SMART Patrol team—some of whom are former hunters and illegal loggers—conducts daily patrols in the Aek Pahu and Ulu Ala Conservation Areas.

One of the team members, Parman Sitanggang from Wek 4 Village, has been working to protect the conservation area for nearly two years. He used to collect timber and hunt in the same area. During patrols, he records everything he observes in the field, including wildlife, signs of illegal logging, and hunting activities.

“If we find wildlife, logging activities, or signs of encroachment, we simply take a photo and record it in the application along with its coordinates,” he said.

On the other hand, monitoring the quality of treated water from the Martabe Gold Mine that is discharged into the Batang Toru River also involves representatives from communities in villages surrounding the mining area. One of them is Ali Marhot Siregar. A resident of Hapesong Baru Village, he has been part of the integrated water quality monitoring team since 2024.

“Water samples are collected from several monitoring points every month and then tested by an independent laboratory in Jakarta. The results are announced to the public every three months,” he said.

In addition to the opening of Ecobrick Park, PT Agincourt Resources (PTAR) marked World Environment Day 2026 by organizing a Mangrove Conservation Clean-Up Action and an Artificial Coral Reef Construction Training program in Central Tapanuli, involving both community members and employees.

Meaningful change often begins with simple actions taken together. This spirit became the central message of the Seremoni Pemanfaatan Ecobrick held by Agincourt Resources on 30th June 2026 as part of the journey of the Aksi Bikin Ecobrick Programme, a collaborative initiative designed to encourage communities to manage plastic waste more responsibly while fostering a long-term culture of environmental awareness.

Since its launch from July to December 2025, the programme successfully collected 10,000 ecobrick bottles, equivalent to reducing approximately 2.5 tonnes of plastic waste from the environment. Thousands of these bottles have now been transformed into the Ecobrick Park at Sopo Daganak, as well as visual installations at Martabe Cocoa and Martabe Farm, serving not only as landscape features but also as educational spaces that remind people that plastic waste still holds value when managed through creativity and collective action.

The success of this programme reflects the active involvement of various stakeholders, including schools, waste banks, local government, media, and communities working together to build new habits in responsible waste management.

In his remarks, Senior Manager Processing Agincourt Resources, Altur Tambun, emphasised that the programme’s greatest achievement lies not merely in the number of ecobricks collected, but in the growing shared awareness that protecting the environment must begin with consistent everyday action.

This same spirit is reflected in the inspiring journey of SMP Negeri 1 Batang Toru, which successfully earned recognition as an Adiwiyata School through various initiatives aimed at building a strong culture of environmental responsibility within the school community. One of the practices continuously developed is the use of ecobricks as part of waste management education while instilling environmental awareness from an early age.

Another inspiring story comes from Sri Wahyuni, a community member who has demonstrated that waste management can also create new economic opportunities. Through her creativity, discarded packaging waste that once had no value has been transformed into products such as bags that carry both functional and economic value for the community.

Through collaboration involving communities, educational institutions, waste management groups, and the Company, Agincourt Resources continues to encourage real action aligned with the spirit of World Environment Day 2026 under the theme It’s Time to Work for Climate. This programme demonstrates that protecting the planet does not always begin with grand actions, but rather with simple habits carried out together and continuously nurtured into sustainable change for future generations.

Environmental sustainability is determined not only by the conservation of forests but also by the health of coastal and marine ecosystems that support life. As part of the 2026 World Environment Day programme, Agincourt Resources organised a Mangrove Conservation Clean-up Campaign and an Artificial Reef Construction Workshop at the Pandan Mangrove Conservation Area, Central Tapanuli Regency, on 25th June 2026.

Held under the theme “It’s Time to Act for the Climate”, the event brought together local communities, regional government representatives, environmental organisations, members of the media, and Agincourt Resources employees in a collaborative effort to safeguard coastal ecosystems.

The programme was organised in partnership with Yamantab Waste Bank and the Mandiri Lestari Forest Farmer Group. Activities began with a clean-up of the beach and surrounding mangrove forest. A total of 60 participants collected approximately 150 kilograms of waste, including plastic, paper, cardboard, metal cans, and glass. All collected waste was sorted before being managed and recycled through Yamantab Waste Bank as part of the implementation of circular economy principles.

Damai Mendrofa, Chair of Yamantab Central Tapanuli, explained that the initiative aimed to raise public awareness of the importance of protecting mangrove ecosystems while encouraging visitors to take responsibility for the waste they generate, preventing pollution of both the sea and mangrove habitats.

In addition to the clean-up campaign, participants attended a knowledge-sharing session on coastal ecosystems delivered by Yuna Ratna Wulansari, Biodiversity Researcher from Agincourt Resources’ Environment Department. The session highlighted the interconnected roles of mangrove forests, seagrass meadows, and coral reefs in maintaining the ecological balance of coastal environments.

The programme continued with a hands-on training session on the construction of artificial coral reefs, led by Manager of Biodiversity & Environmental Strategic Development, Syaiful Anwar, together with Damai Mendrofa. During the session, participants gained a deeper understanding of the vital role of coral reefs as habitats for diverse marine life, natural barriers that protect coastlines from erosion, natural water filters, and essential ecosystems that support sustainable fisheries. The session also explored the major threats facing coral reef ecosystems and the various rehabilitation measures available, including the installation of artificial coral reefs and coral transplantation. Following the presentation, participants took part in a practical exercise, constructing artificial coral reef modules under the guidance of the facilitators.

Rahman Sibuea, Chair of Kelompok Tani Hutan (KTH) Mandiri Lestari, expressed his appreciation for the collaboration among all parties involved in making the programme a success. He noted that the strong partnership between local communities, community organisations, and the company represents a tangible commitment to conserving mangrove and marine ecosystems while fostering a culture of environmental stewardship across Central Tapanuli Regency.

Climate change has become one of the most pressing global challenges, requiring collective action from all stakeholders to take meaningful and measurable action. One of the largest contributors to rising greenhouse gas emissions stems from production and consumption patterns that are still largely dominated by the linear economic model, where natural resources are extracted, processed into products, used, and ultimately discarded as waste. This approach not only accelerates natural resource depletion but also increases environmental pressure and contributes to the growing impact of climate change.

Amid these challenges, the concept of the circular economy has emerged as an approach that encourages a more responsible and sustainable way of managing resources. Unlike the conventional take-make-dispose economic model, a circular economy seeks to extend the lifecycle of products and materials, minimise waste generation, and reduce dependence on the extraction of new raw materials.

In simple terms, the circular economy is built upon three main principles: eliminating waste from the design stage, extending the use cycle of products and materials, and supporting the regeneration of natural systems. This approach enables industries to reuse materials that were previously considered waste, reducing resource consumption while lowering carbon emissions generated throughout production processes.

The implementation of a circular economy also plays an important role in addressing climate change. When materials are reused, the need for extracting new natural resources can be significantly reduced. At the same time, the volume of waste sent to landfill decreases, helping to minimise greenhouse gas emissions generated from production, transportation, and waste management activities.

Despite offering significant benefits, the transition towards a circular economy still faces several challenges, ranging from limited recycling infrastructure and society’s dependence on single-use products to the need for a fundamental shift in consumption behaviour. For this reason, the successful implementation of a circular economy requires collaboration from all parties, including governments through stronger regulations, industries through sustainable product innovation, and communities through everyday habits such as sorting waste, reusing materials, and reducing household waste generation.

In the spirit of World Environment Day 2026 under the theme Working for Climate, the circular economy reminds us that environmental action does not always begin with large-scale initiatives. Every effort to reduce waste, reuse materials, and manage resources responsibly represents a meaningful contribution towards protecting the planet.

Working for climate means understanding that the future of the environment depends on how we manage resources today. Through circular economy principles, every small action taken collectively can become an important step towards creating a more sustainable future for generations to come.

If not properly managed, this waste has the potential to cause contamination to soil, water, and the surrounding environment.

As part of its commitment to sustainable mining practices, Agincourt Resources has implemented a used oil waste management strategy through the Waste Oil Processing Plant (WOPP) programme. The programme utilises used oil as a substitute material in blasting operations, allowing waste that previously required specialised disposal to be reused within operational processes that still hold technical value.

In its implementation, the WOPP programme uses a material mixture containing approximately 80 per cent used oil as a substitute supporting material for blasting activities. This approach forms part of the Company’s application of the principles of reduce, reuse, recovery, waste minimisation, and circular economy in operational waste management. Through this utilisation process, the volume of used oil waste requiring storage or external disposal can be significantly reduced.

The management of used oil waste begins with proper segregation and standardised storage procedures, including the use of specially labelled containers, secondary containment systems, and protected storage areas designed to minimise spill risks and rain exposure. In addition, before being utilised in the WOPP programme, the used oil also undergoes quality control processes to ensure compliance with technical specifications and operational safety requirements.

Beyond improving waste management efficiency, the programme also helps reduce the need for transporting waste to external parties, thereby contributing to the reduction of indirect emissions associated with waste transportation activities. From an operational perspective, the implementation of WOPP also supports resource efficiency and the sustainable reduction of waste management costs.

As the programme involves flammable materials and blasting activities, the implementation of WOPP is supported by strict risk control measures, including the application of waste handling SOPs, regular inspections of storage facilities, worker training on hazardous material handling, the use of appropriate PPE, and emergency response preparedness. These measures are implemented to ensure that safety remains the highest priority throughout all stages of waste management and utilisation.

Through the implementation of the Waste Oil Processing Plant, Agincourt Resources continues to strengthen its commitment to innovative, responsible, and sustainable waste management practices. This approach forms an important part of supporting mining practices aligned with Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles while reinforcing the implementation of circular economy practices within the Company’s operational environment.

The accumulation of used wooden pallets is a common issue in mining logistics activities. Pallets initially used to transport chemicals, heavy equipment spare parts, and various operational materials gradually become unused and risk turning into waste. If not properly managed, this condition can increase the volume of non-Hazardous and Non-Toxic waste (non-B3), occupy storage space, add handling costs, and create occupational safety risks. In fact, with appropriate management, used wooden pallets can be reused as valuable resources and support sustainable operational practices.

Within mining areas, wooden pallets are utilised in various operational activities, including the transport of chemicals such as reagents, drums, and bulk packaging (big bags), distribution of heavy equipment spare parts, and storage of materials in warehouses and workshops. The high frequency of use causes the number of discarded pallets to continually increase over time.

With proper management, used wooden pallets can be reused through the following practical approaches:

1. Supporting Material for Temporary Infrastructure

Wooden pallets can serve as temporary working platforms, bases for material storage, and light access paths in muddy areas. This helps reduce slip hazards while preventing soil damage caused by vehicle activity.

2. Occupational Health and Safety Facilities

From an Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) perspective, used wooden pallets can be modified into Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) storage racks, work-area barriers, and mounting media for safety signage in workshops or warehouses.

3. Environmental Engineering Material

In environmental management, wooden pallets have multiple applications, such as temporary erosion control structures, absorbents for fuel or hydrocarbon spills, planting or compost media after being shredded into sawdust, and early revegetation support structures such as mulch or compost retainers.

4. Wooden Pallets Innovation and Circular Economy Programme

Through circular economy principles, waste is not immediately discarded but reprocessed into useful products. Used wooden pallets can be processed into hydroseeding media (planting material for revegetation), simple furniture, storage boxes, and public facilities in accommodation and office areas.

Their reuse provides several benefits, including reducing non-Hazardous and Non-Toxic waste generation, lowering procurement costs for new materials, improving resource efficiency, and supporting Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) commitments.

Agincourt Resources has repurposed wooden pallet waste into compost in the form of sawdust used as planting media. This approach not only reduces waste but also supports mine rehabilitation and greening programmes. The utilisation of used logistics pallets demonstrates that simple actions can produce significant impact. Materials once considered useless can be transformed into new resources through planning and innovation. This effort also strengthens a culture of sustainability in the mining sector, where every operational process is oriented not only towards production, but also towards responsibility for the environment and the future.

The concept of the circular economy is an economic system designed to eliminate waste and pollution, keep products and materials in use for as long as possible, and regenerate natural systems.

This approach differs from the conventional linear economic model based on the take–make–dispose pattern, which involves extracting raw materials, manufacturing products, and discarding them after a single use. In a circular economy, resources are managed sustainably through maintenance, reuse, repair, remanufacturing, and recycling, enabling materials to retain their value while minimising waste (Ellen MacArthur Foundation).

At the Martabe Gold Mine, circular economy principles are implemented through a range of practical initiatives as part of the company’s commitment to environmental protection and community empowerment. One such initiative is the reuse of used wooden pallets from warehouse operations. Instead of being discarded, these pallets are collected and distributed to local communities to be transformed into furniture, handicrafts, or wood shavings with economic value. This practice not only reduces waste volumes but also creates income-generating opportunities for community partners around the mine.

The management of used jumbo bags from mining activities is also carried out sustainably through collaboration with waste banks in the operational area. Jumbo bags that are no longer fit for use are collected, sorted, and either reused or recycled by community partners. This approach helps extend the life cycle of materials while reducing environmental pressure from industrial waste.

In addition, several operational units at the Martabe Gold Mine apply used oil processing practices. Oil categorised as hazardous waste is treated so that part of it can be refined and reused for specific on-site needs, such as substituting fuel in the production of explosives. This practice contributes to reducing hazardous waste, lowering dependence on fossil fuels, and improving operational efficiency.

These initiatives reflect the application of circular economy principles at the Martabe Gold Mine—keeping materials within the economic cycle for as long as possible while minimising environmental impacts. Beyond waste management, this approach also creates added value for surrounding communities and reinforces the company’s commitment to responsible and sustainable mining practices.

The application of a circular economy is one of the keys to tackling the challenge of plastic waste. Instead of ending up in landfills, plastic can be recycled into useful and economically valuable products. This spirit was reflected in Aek Garut Village, Pandan Subdistrict, Central Tapanuli Regency, on Tuesday, 2nd September 2025, when dozens of residents flocked to the Bank Sampah Yamantap. Most of them were women carrying plastic bottles filled with compacted dry waste, processed into ecobricks, ready to be sold.

The Director and Coordinator of the Bank Sampah Yamantap, Damai Mendrofa, explained that ecobricks are part of a plastic recycling initiative. “By packing plastic into bottles, the waste is isolated from the environment, preventing pollution, while at the same time providing economic value for the community,” he said.

Since its launch two months ago, the Bank Sampah Yamantap has collected 3,800 ecobricks from three areas: the Martabe Gold Mine Ring, the Aek Garut Mangrove Area, and communities around the waste bank. Each bottle is valued at IDR 6,000, provided it weighs at least 200 grams and is clean and intact.

This programme is fully supported by Agincourt Resources through the “Aksi Bikin Ecobrick dari Hati untuk Bumi” campaign. General Manager Operations & Deputy Director Operations, Rahmat Lubis, emphasised that this initiative is aligned with the company’s sustainability principles and Indonesia’s national waste management targets.

The community welcomed the programme with enthusiasm. A housewife, Gatriani Silitonga, shared her joy at being able to both earn extra income and protect the environment. Meanwhile, the Head of Aek Garut Village, Herman Harefa, expressed his appreciation, noting that the initiative not only reduces plastic waste but also creates jobs and enhances family incomes.
