SMA Negeri 1 Batang Toru serves students from four sub-districts: Batang Toru, Muara Batang Toru, Angkola Sangkunur, and Marancar, with a student population of over 600. To date, most graduates have pursued higher education within Sumatra, but only a few have successfully enrolled in top-tier universities outside the island.

Several key challenges contribute to this trend, including limited awareness of university admission pathways, intense competition with students from other schools, and a lack of confidence. Through the Martabe Goes to School program, students and teachers are expected to gain broader perspectives on educational opportunities beyond Sumatra, particularly at IPB University, and be encouraged to pursue their dreams with greater confidence.
