Batuhoring and Hutaraja Bag Makers Receive Intensive Support to Expand Market Reach

Sep 15, 2024

In an effort to improve the skills and quality of local bag-making crafts, Agincourt Resources recently conducted an intensive production training program for the Batuhoring and Hutaraja artisan groups. This activity took place over two periods, four days in Batuhoring and three days in Hutaraja, from Monday to Sunday, September 9-15, 2024. The program was facilitated by two experts from Kalanata Yogyakarta, Pidi Winata and Ridho Iman Nasution, who provided guidance on more efficient and innovative bag production techniques.

The training began with an evaluation of the products already produced by both artisan groups. The experts assessed the quality of stitching, material selection, and the techniques previously applied.

During the training, the artisans were involved in hands-on practice aimed at improving their skills in producing various types of bags. The products taught included small bags, backpacks, and laptop bags, with a focus on using higher quality materials such as leather and woven fabrics. In addition, they were taught to combine various types of materials so that the resulting products have higher aesthetic and functional value. The experts paid special attention to mastering the techniques of using certain machines.

Devi Jayanti Telaumbanua, one of the artisans from Batuhoring, expressed her enthusiasm for this training. “Although it was only done in a short time, we felt many benefits from this training. The trainers not only guided us technically but also motivated us to be more creative in designing products. Our stitching quality and accuracy in material selection have improved significantly after following this training,” she said.

With the increasing quality of products, it is hoped that bags made by artisans in Batuhoring and Hutaraja can penetrate broader markets. This will be an opportunity to reach more consumers and boost the local economy.
