Sustainable Sea Turtle Conservation Efforts Through the Release of Dozens of Sea Turtle Hatchlings at Muara Opu West Beach

Dec 29, 2024

On Sunday, December 29, 2024, Agincourt Resources, in partnership with the Ovata Indonesia Institute, local environmental activists, and government agencies, organized the release of dozens of hatchling sea turtles into the ocean. This event took place at Pantai Barat Muara Opu, Tapanuli Selatan.

Sea turtles are critically endangered species, as listed in the IUCN Red List and Appendix I of CITES. The declining population of sea turtles in the wild is attributed to various factors, including climate change, poaching, and habitat degradation. Therefore, protecting sea turtles is crucial for maintaining the sustainability of marine ecosystems.

Pantai Barat Muara Opu holds significant potential as a sea turtle habitat, serving as a nesting site for five of the six sea turtle species found in Indonesia, including leatherback, hawksbill, green, olive ridley, and loggerhead turtles. The area also boasts a natural ecosystem that supports sea turtle survival.

Syaiful also added that Agincourt Resources is planning to develop a sea turtle hatchery and rearing facility, as well as a research station to scientifically study sea turtle behavior and health. “We believe that these conservation efforts will not only contribute to sea turtle conservation but also help strengthen the sustainability of marine ecosystems in this area,” he said.

The sustainability of these sea turtle conservation efforts aligns with Agincourt Resources’ commitment to its Biodiversity Action and Management Plan. Furthermore, these efforts support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 14, which focuses on conserving marine ecosystems and biodiversity. Syaiful emphasized that these conservation activities are also in line with Agincourt Resources’ efforts to achieve PROPER Beyond Compliance, an assessment given by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry to companies demonstrating a high commitment to environmental conservation.

“Our cooperation with Agincourt Resources began in 2023, and we are very grateful for their consistent support. Through this collaboration, we hope to create a more systematic and sustainable impact on sea turtle conservation in this region,” said Erwinsyah Siregar, Chairman of the Ovata Indonesia Institute.
