10 YEARS OF ADVANCING SUSTAINABILITY

01

HISTORY OF BATANGTORU AND MARTABE

Starting with a fascinated German, a beautiful painting becomes historical evidence. His name was Franz Wilhelm Junghuhn who was entranced by the beauty of the Batangtoru River. Behind the swift currents of the Batangtoru River, gold nanoparticles flow from several hills in South Tapanuli. The Batangtoru Bridge became the initial location for the Geological team to look for rock anomalies containing gold. The Geological Team from Normandy Anglo Asian PTE, LTD found rocks with a gold content and percentage of 14.1 parts per billion (ppb) or 0.14 grams per tonne in 1995 or 155 years after Junghuhn finished his Batang Toru River painting (in 1840).

MILESTONES AT THE START OF THE EXPLORATION

In 1994, President Director of Normandy Anglo Asian PTE. LTD., Bill Howell, called young geologists who had been with Ashton Mining since 1993,  Dian Raksadipa and Septamto Ingkriwang to form a  follow-up exploration team that was sent to the field. Normandy continued to collect samples, from the river and brought it back to the laboratory to study these samples.

03

CONSTRUCTION SURROUNDED BY ASPIRATION EXPRESSION

After the exploration stage which confirmed the gold content came the news from the plant. The construction phase was pushed back from the plan. Questions and grievances from the local community began to emerge. Aspiration expression became a challenge in carrying out several activities, such as installing treated water distribution pipes, and constructing various operational facilities. Eventually, mediation by heart succeeded in bringing together the goals of the local government, the community, and the Company. All looking for production solutions.

04

The Synergies with communities

The green light to install the water pipe was also obtained. The drainage of the treated water from the Martabe Gold Mine process can be carried out. The quality of the treated water was confirmed at three independent laboratories, in Jakarta, Bogor and Serpong. The results had shown it does not contain harmful ingredients. A period of stabilization of the situation ensued. The South Tapanuli District Government provided support for the Martabe Gold Mine to operate by following and complying with regulations.

05

PRODUCTION BEGINS WITH STRATEGY

Various strategies to maximize production were carried out. Building the plant, managing acid mine drainage, and processing gold with cyanide were some of the efforts. Not only that, one of the other major projects was establishing an international standard Tailing Storage Facility (TSF). 24 July 2012 became a historic day, as the Martabe Gold Mine officially produced the first gold and silver bullion.

06

MARTABE SUCCESS STORY, COMMITMENT AND REAL ACTION

The year 2012 was a milestone for the massive exploration pace and performance of the Company. During the first 3 years, Martabe Gold Mine’s revenue was very encouraging. The contribution to the economy of South Tapanuli and North Sumatra was also quite large, starting from the contribution to the creation of Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP), employment, investment, to regional income. This performance was also balanced with positive contributions and impacts on the environment. Monitoring of the quality of the treated water continues to be carried out.

07

MARTABE CARES AND SHARES

Contributions and positive impacts on the community are also the main focus. Empathy-based communication and negotiation are applied. Various programs have been initiated and implemented, such as Integrated Service Post (Posyandu), Children’s Reading Garden, public infrastructure and facilities constructions, and also various activities to strengthen good relations such as religious events and donations. Not only that, but local economic empowerment has also not gone unnoticed by the Company. PT Agincourt Resources as the operator of the Martabe Gold Mine has transformed into a world-class mining company that has high performance and is committed to environmental management and community empowerment.

ADVANCING WITH ASTRA

PT Agincourt Resources is officially acquired by PT Danusa Tambang Nusantara which is owned by PT United Tractors Tbk. and PT Pamapersada Nusantara. This means that they are also part of the ‘big family’ of PT Astra International Tbk. The acquisition process, which took 1 year, was not wasted. Various innovations and applications of technology have been applied. Gaining trust through compliance with regulations to continue to grow is also an asset. Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) continue to be monitored. Like Astra, PT Agincourt Resources continues to move BEYOND THE REGULATION.
