Agincourt Resources, in collaboration with the residents of Garoga Village, held another successful lubuk larangan harvest at the Garoga River on Monday, 19 May 2025. This initiative is the result of a fish restocking program conducted by Agincourt Resources in 2024, which involved the release of 4,100 fingerlings of jurung and carp. This year’s harvest yielded approximately 250 kilograms of fish, predominantly jurung, a freshwater species endemic to Batang Toru with high ecological value. The lubuk larangan initiative, launched in 2021, is part of Agincourt Resources’ commitment to conserving river ecosystems while improving the livelihoods of communities surrounding the Martabe Gold Mine’s operational area.

Dedy Bugis, Senior Supervisor for Community Engagement at Agincourt Resources, emphasized that the lubuk larangan program reflects genuine collaboration between the company and local communities in preserving natural resources sustainably. “This program not only protects local fish species like jurung, but also empowers communities to become economically independent while upholding their traditional ecological wisdom. This year, we expanded the initiative to two new locations: Padang Lancat Village and Hapesong Plantation Village. Last year, we supported communities in Garoga, Aek Ngadol, Batu Hula, and Hapesong Lama,” Dedy explained. According to him, lubuk larangan is more than just a cultural tradition—it is an effective conservation strategy for safeguarding freshwater ecosystems while reinforcing social and economic resilience.
Garoga Village Head, Risman Rambe, shared that over the past four years, the village has successfully organized eight lubuk larangan events, all of which have received enthusiastic support from the community. One of the key components of these events is paid public fishing, the proceeds of which fund various social programs. “At the start of this year’s event, we raised around IDR 30 million, which was allocated for orphan support, elderly assistance, aid for underprivileged families, and mosque construction. To date, total revenue from ticket sales has reached IDR 64 million. This year, we are beginning to allocate the funds toward long-term needs such as the purchase of a village ambulance,” said Risman.
He further added that the program’s success has opened up new opportunities for rural economic development. Plans are now underway to develop the Garoga River area into a water-based tourism destination. The concept includes whitewater rafting, a riverside culinary park, and a local fish hatchery, all of which will utilize the existing Green Open Space (RTH) infrastructure.
