Agincourt Resources Deploys Helicopter, Successfully Releases Sumatran Tiger “Senja” into TNGL

May 24, 2025

Blangkejeren, Aceh, May 24, 2025 – PT Agincourt Resources, the operator of the Martabe Gold Mine, has supported the release of a Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae) named “Senja” into its natural habitat in the Kedah conservation area, Gunung Leuser National Park, Aceh, on May 21, 2025, as a form of commitment to preserving the biodiversity ecosystem of Sumatra Island.

“Senja,” a female tiger approximately 5–6 years old, was a victim of human-wildlife conflict in Besitang District, Langkat Regency, North Sumatra, in June 2024.

After 11 months of intensive rehabilitation at the Barumun Sumatran Tiger Sanctuary in North Padang Lawas Regency — a collaboration between the North Sumatra Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BBKSDA) and the Parsamuhan Bodhicitta Mandala Medan Foundation — “Senja” was declared healthy and ready to return to the wild.

PT Agincourt Resources (PTAR) as a conservation partner actively supports this release by providing an SA 315B Lama (Aerospatiale) helicopter. The translocation of “Senja” used the longline method – a cage suspended from the helicopter body – which was suitable for the terrain conditions and minimized the impact on vegetation.

The Vice President Director of PT Agincourt Resources, Ruli Tanio, expressed his highest appreciation to all parties involved for the successful release of “Senja” into its natural habitat. Besides the North Sumatra BBKSDA and the Bodhicitta Mandala Medan Foundation, the Gunung Leuser National Park Agency (TNGL) also played an important role in this effort.

The success of this conservation effort would not have been possible without the close collaboration between various parties, including the government, conservation agencies, and the local community around TNGL. With this collaboration, we are confident that we can create a more harmonious future between humans and nature,” said Ruli.

According to him, the release of “Senja” aligns with the spirit upheld by PTAR, namely Living in Harmony, which aims to harmonize the sustainability of the company’s operations with environmental and social responsibilities.

This commitment is also in line with our efforts to support sustainable development goals that emphasize ecological balance, sustainable forest management, and biodiversity conservation,” said Ruli.

The selection of Gunung Leuser National Park (TNGL) as the release site considered several important factors, such as its distance from human settlements, the high availability of prey animals, and signs of other tiger presence that support “Senja’s” chances of survival. Human activity is rarely found around the release area.

Director of External Relations, Sanny Tjan, said the release of “Senja” strengthens the Company’s commitment to supporting conservation programs, which have previously been successful in releasing other tigers in several national parks in Sumatra.

Previously, PTAR facilitated the release of a Sumatran tiger named Bestie to TNGL in November 2022. In the same year, PTAR also supported the release of two Sumatran tigers into the Core Zone of Kerinci Seblat National Park, Jambi.

The efforts of Sumatran tigers releases that we consistently support are a tangible manifestation of our commitment to maintaining ecosystem balance, especially in the Sumatra forest areas. We believe that wildlife conservation, especially key species like tigers, is crucial for the long-term sustainability of the environment,” said Sanny.

She also emphasized that the conservation programs supported by PTAR always involve a collaborative approach with various parties, including local governments, conservation agencies, and local communities, to ensure the long-term success of each conservation activity.
