Agincourt Resources’ Commitment to Nature Conservation for Sustainable Mining

Jun 20, 2025

Agincourt Resources continues to demonstrate its strong commitment to responsible and environmentally conscious mining practices through a variety of nature conservation programs in the vicinity of the Martabe Gold Mine operational area. One of the Company’s concrete efforts is the development of conservation zones as part of its long-term sustainability strategy.

Nature conservation is a critical endeavor aimed at preserving biodiversity—namely, the variety of plant, animal, and other organism species that coexist within an ecosystem. Amid industrial activity, such preservation efforts have become an inseparable component of sustainable mining strategies. For Agincourt Resources, conservation is not merely about regulatory compliance; it is a vital part of its social and environmental responsibility as a steward of natural resources.

Broadly speaking, conservation approaches are categorized into two methods: in situ and ex situ. In situ conservation occurs within the natural habitat of the protected species. Examples include protected forests, national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, and nature reserves. Conversely, ex situ conservation is conducted outside the natural habitat, such as in zoos, safari parks, or botanical gardens. Both approaches have proven effective in safeguarding rare species across the globe.

Numerous successful examples from around the world highlight the effectiveness of these conservation methods. In the United States, Yellowstone National Park managed to restore the grey wolf (Canis lupus) population from 31 to over 100 individuals in just five years. In India, Kaziranga National Park increased the population of the one-horned Indian rhinoceros from just 75 to more than 2,600 since the early 20th century. In the United Kingdom, the Royal Botanic Gardens have preserved tens of thousands of rare plant species from nearly 200 countries. Indonesia has also achieved significant success in developing conservation programs to protect and breed endangered wildlife and flora.

Building on these global achievements, Agincourt Resources adopts both conservation approaches in an integrated manner. For its in situ conservation efforts, the Company has established buffer zones surrounding the mining area. These zones are planted with native vegetation, including endemic hardwood trees and ground-cover shrubs. These plants play a critical role in stabilizing soil to prevent erosion, absorbing rainwater, and offering shelter and food sources for local wildlife.

However, Agincourt Resources’ conservation zones serve far more than aesthetic purposes. They function as alternative habitats, wildlife corridors, and natural barriers that protect the surrounding landscape from direct mining impacts. Additionally, these areas help raise community awareness about the importance of balancing economic development with ecological preservation.

Meanwhile, under its ex situ approach, Agincourt Resources has developed a satellite nursery facility as part of its sustainable reforestation efforts. This facility cultivates various native plant species, which are later transplanted to designated rehabilitation areas. The nursery is equipped with plant maintenance infrastructure, greenhouses, and irrigation systems, and is supported by trained local workers specializing in conservation. This approach ensures that reclamation and revegetation activities are not only technically sound but also community-empowering.

To further demonstrate its environmental commitment, Agincourt Resources actively collaborates with multiple stakeholders, including government bodies, academic institutions, and local communities. These collaborations are realized through activities such as environmental seminars, conservation training, tree planting, and the release of wildlife into their natural habitats. The Company’s steadfast dedication to environmental stewardship has been recognized by the Indonesian government through the Green PROPER Award (Company Performance Rating Program in Environmental Management) in 2024, which was officially awarded in February 2025. This marks the second time Agincourt Resources has received this prestigious recognition for its innovation and sustainable community empowerment programs.

Through the integrated application of in situ and ex situ conservation, Agincourt Resources aspires to deliver long-term benefits for the environment, particularly in the areas surrounding the mine. However, environmental preservation is not the responsibility of a single entity. Every individual has a role to play in protecting our shared planet. For this reason, Agincourt Resources invites all stakeholders to contribute collectively to environmental conservation efforts for a greener and more sustainable future.
