The concept of the circular economy is an economic system designed to eliminate waste and pollution, keep products and materials in use for as long as possible, and regenerate natural systems.
This approach differs from the conventional linear economic model based on the take–make–dispose pattern, which involves extracting raw materials, manufacturing products, and discarding them after a single use. In a circular economy, resources are managed sustainably through maintenance, reuse, repair, remanufacturing, and recycling, enabling materials to retain their value while minimising waste (Ellen MacArthur Foundation).
At the Martabe Gold Mine, circular economy principles are implemented through a range of practical initiatives as part of the company’s commitment to environmental protection and community empowerment. One such initiative is the reuse of used wooden pallets from warehouse operations. Instead of being discarded, these pallets are collected and distributed to local communities to be transformed into furniture, handicrafts, or wood shavings with economic value. This practice not only reduces waste volumes but also creates income-generating opportunities for community partners around the mine.
The management of used jumbo bags from mining activities is also carried out sustainably through collaboration with waste banks in the operational area. Jumbo bags that are no longer fit for use are collected, sorted, and either reused or recycled by community partners. This approach helps extend the life cycle of materials while reducing environmental pressure from industrial waste.

In addition, several operational units at the Martabe Gold Mine apply used oil processing practices. Oil categorised as hazardous waste is treated so that part of it can be refined and reused for specific on-site needs, such as substituting fuel in the production of explosives. This practice contributes to reducing hazardous waste, lowering dependence on fossil fuels, and improving operational efficiency.
These initiatives reflect the application of circular economy principles at the Martabe Gold Mine—keeping materials within the economic cycle for as long as possible while minimising environmental impacts. Beyond waste management, this approach also creates added value for surrounding communities and reinforces the company’s commitment to responsible and sustainable mining practices.
