Greening Post-Mining Land with Local Simarbaliding Plants

Nov 26, 2024

Agincourt Resources consistently demonstrates its commitment to balancing operational activities with environmental preservation. One notable initiative involves utilizing the endemic Simarbaliding plant, scientifically known as Ixonanthes petiolaris. Native to Sumatra, particularly the Tapanuli region, Simarbaliding thrives in tropical rainforests and can grow to heights of 20–30 meters with a straight, hard trunk. Its elliptical leaves have a smooth, glossy surface, and it bears small red fruits that attract wildlife, especially birds.

The reclamation process using Simarbaliding involves several key stages:

1.Land Condition Analysis

Before planting, the post-mining land undergoes a comprehensive analysis covering soil physical properties, soil chemistry, and drainage conditions. This step ensures the identification of necessary soil improvements and optimal conditions for Simarbaliding growth.

2.Land Preparation

The land is prepared by leveling the surface, creating planting holes, and applying organic fertilizers.

3.Simarbaliding Seedling Planting

High-quality, healthy Simarbaliding seedlings are planted at appropriate intervals, typically 3–4 meters apart. The use of local seedlings ensures better adaptation to the environment.

4.Maintenance

Maintenance activities include watering, fertilization, weed control, and growth monitoring.

Using Simarbaliding for post-mining land reclamation provides numerous ecological and social benefits. Ecologically, the plant helps restore degraded soil structure, with its deep and robust roots reducing erosion and stabilizing the land. It also enhances biodiversity by offering habitats and food sources for wildlife. Socially, incorporating local plants like Simarbaliding educates employees and surrounding communities about the importance of preserving endemic species and maintaining ecological balance.
