Sikundur Study: Bioacoustic Technology for Conservation

Feb 28, 2025

The Environment Department of Agincourt Resources, in collaboration with researchers from Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) and the Yayasan Ekosistem Lestari (YEL), conducted a comparative study visit to the Sikundur Research Station in Aceh Tamiang Regency from February 26-28, 2025. This initiative aimed to deepen understanding of the research station’s management, particularly in the application of bioacoustic technology for wildlife monitoring. The study visit was driven by Agincourt Resources’ commitment to continuous innovation in environmental conservation and biodiversity preservation within its operational areas.

Located within the Gunung Leuser National Park conservation area and managed in collaboration with Yayasan Ekosistem Lestari, the Sikundur Research Station serves as a biodiversity research center. This study focused on the implementation of bioacoustic technology—an innovative method for recording wildlife sounds without disturbing their natural habitat. Bioacoustic devices are strategically placed in the forest for a specific period, allowing for the collection of sound data while minimizing human interaction with wildlife. This method is considered highly effective in maintaining ecological balance.

In addition to studying bioacoustic techniques, the Agincourt Resources team gained insights into the overall management of the Sikundur Research Station. This included the development of a trail system, the use of camera traps, orangutan population monitoring, and an understanding of the research station’s general conditions. This study visit represents a significant step for Agincourt Resources in its ongoing efforts to innovate, enhance environmental conservation, and preserve biodiversity within its operational areas.
