From Villages to the Nation: Batang Toru and Muara Batang Toru MSMEs Ready to Scale Up

The collaborative development program for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) between Agincourt Resources and the Astra Dharma Bhakti Foundation (YDBA) was officially launched with a Kick-Off event on Monday, 9 June 2025. Held at Sopo Daganak in Napa Village, the event was attended by 30 MSME entrepreneurs from the Batang Toru and Muara Batang Toru sub-districts. This partnership aims to support MSMEs in becoming professional and highly competitive entrepreneurs, in line with the region’s vision for sustainable economic development.

The launch was attended by General Manager Operations and Deputy Director of Operations at Agincourt Resources, Rahmat Lubis, Senior Manager of Community at Agincourt Resources, Christine Pepah, YDBA Treasurer Agung K. Sampurno, Head of the Department of Trade and Cooperatives for South Tapanuli Novita Sari Wahyuni, Head of the Department of Industry for South Tapanuli Zulfahmi, Batang Toru Military Commander Captain Inf. H. Siarit, Batang Toru Sub-District Head Maratinggi, local MSME actors, as well as village heads and sub-district officials. 

“MSMEs are the primary driving force of Indonesia’s economy. That is why we consider them a vital part of our long-term sustainability strategy through the implementation of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) principles,” said Rahmat Lubis. He expressed hope that this development initiative would give rise to new sources of livelihood for local communities. 

Agung K. Sampurno also emphasized the importance of cross-sector synergy to accelerate MSME growth. “Through collaborations like this, local MSMEs can grow faster and more sustainably,” he stated. He explained that since its establishment in 1980 by PT Astra International Tbk, YDBA has remained committed to nurturing entrepreneurs into professionals capable of competing in broader markets.

Sri Dewi Juliani Sembiring, an MSME entrepreneur from Batu Hula Village, shared her experience as a participant in the development program. “The potential is very promising. Over the past three years under Agincourt Resources’ guidance, I’ve received support in various aspects such as production, training, packaging, kitchen development, and marketing,” said the mother of two, who runs a banana chips business.
