The accumulation of used wooden pallets is a common issue in mining logistics activities. Pallets initially used to transport chemicals, heavy equipment spare parts, and various operational materials gradually become unused and risk turning into waste. If not properly managed, this condition can increase the volume of non-Hazardous and Non-Toxic waste (non-B3), occupy storage space, add handling costs, and create occupational safety risks. In fact, with appropriate management, used wooden pallets can be reused as valuable resources and support sustainable operational practices.
Within mining areas, wooden pallets are utilised in various operational activities, including the transport of chemicals such as reagents, drums, and bulk packaging (big bags), distribution of heavy equipment spare parts, and storage of materials in warehouses and workshops. The high frequency of use causes the number of discarded pallets to continually increase over time.
With proper management, used wooden pallets can be reused through the following practical approaches:
1. Supporting Material for Temporary Infrastructure
Wooden pallets can serve as temporary working platforms, bases for material storage, and light access paths in muddy areas. This helps reduce slip hazards while preventing soil damage caused by vehicle activity.
2. Occupational Health and Safety Facilities
From an Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) perspective, used wooden pallets can be modified into Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) storage racks, work-area barriers, and mounting media for safety signage in workshops or warehouses.
3. Environmental Engineering Material
In environmental management, wooden pallets have multiple applications, such as temporary erosion control structures, absorbents for fuel or hydrocarbon spills, planting or compost media after being shredded into sawdust, and early revegetation support structures such as mulch or compost retainers.
4. Innovation and Circular Economy Programme
Through circular economy principles, waste is not immediately discarded but reprocessed into useful products. Used wooden pallets can be processed into hydroseeding media (planting material for revegetation), simple furniture, storage boxes, and public facilities in accommodation and office areas.
The reuse of wooden pallets provides several benefits, including reducing non-Hazardous and Non-Toxic waste generation, lowering procurement costs for new materials, improving resource efficiency, and supporting Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) commitments.
Agincourt Resources has repurposed wooden pallet waste into compost in the form of sawdust used as planting media. This approach not only reduces waste but also supports mine rehabilitation and greening programmes. The utilisation of used logistics pallets demonstrates that simple actions can produce significant impact. Materials once considered useless can be transformed into new resources through planning and innovation. This effort also strengthens a culture of sustainability in the mining sector, where every operational process is oriented not only towards production, but also towards responsibility for the environment and the future.
