May 27, 2025

Samosir, May 27, 2025 – As a concrete manifestation of its commitment to sustainable mining practices, PT Agincourt Resources held a talk show titled “The Ins and Outs of Environmentally Conscious Mining,” which presented the Chief Mining Inspector of the Directorate General of Mineral and Coal, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Hendra Gunawan. This event also serves as the launch moment for the Martabe Gold Mine 2025 Journalistic Works Competition, which encourages journalists to constructively raise sustainability issues.

These two major agendas demonstrate the seriousness of PT Agincourt Resources (PTAR), the operator of the Martabe Gold Mine, in addressing the challenges of modern mining governance, which not only demands efficiency and safety but also emphasizes the importance of environmental preservation and public involvement in overseeing sustainability issues.

PTAR President Director Muliady Sutio said “Living in Harmony” highlights the importance of maintaining a balance between people, the environment, and business activities. The company’s initiatives focus on biodiversity protection, reducing environmental impact, and stakeholder collaboration.

“We strive to implement mining practices that are operationally effective, while remaining socially and environmentally responsible. This is reflected in the various awards we have received, including the Green PROPER Award from the Ministry of Environment for two consecutive years, and the Best Mining Engineering Practices Award 2024 from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources,” said Muliady.

He revealed this during a talk show titled “The Ins and Outs of Environmentally Conscious Mining” in Samosir, North Sumatra, on Monday (26/5/2025). The speakers involved namely the Director of Engineering and Environment for Mineral and Coal, as well as the Chief Mining Inspector of the Directorate General of Mineral and Coal at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Hendra Gunawan; the Expert Staff in Natural Resource Economics at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Lana Saria; a lecturer at the Faculty of Forestry, University of North Sumatra (USU), Onrizal, Ph.D.; and the Superintendent of Environmental Site Support at PTAR, Syaiful Anwar.

Chief Mining Inspector Hendra Gunawan stated that Agincourt Resources has made commendable efforts in implementing good mining practices. According to him, environmental management, reclamation, and post-mining are essential requirements in mining operations to support sustainable development.

“We encourage companies to comply with regulations, especially in environmental management, reclamation, and post-mining activities, which are key to ensuring future quality of life. The implementation of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles is both a challenge and an opportunity for mining companies to improve their competitiveness and ensure business sustainability,” explained Hendra.

In line with that statement, Onrizal, Ph.D., a lecturer at the Faculty of Forestry USU, assessed that the biodiversity conservation initiatives carried out by PTAR have exceeded the obligations that mining companies generally must fulfill.

“Initiatives such as the construction of canopy bridges for primates, conservation zones within the mining area, plans for building a research station, and community-based patrols are tangible steps that demonstrate PTAR’s commitment to preserving the Batang Toru ecosystem. The planting of native fruit trees and regular biodiversity monitoring ensure that conservation is carried out sustainably,” said Onrizal.

The research station that will be built on a 10-hectare is part of strengthening efforts in research and protection of endemic species. This facility will also serve as a collaboration center with research institutions, conservation experts, and non-governmental organizations in supporting the preservation and management of sustainable ecosystems.

PTAR also actively implements the latest technology in mining waste management through dry tailings methods, the development of native tree nurseries, mycorrhizal isolation, and the allocation of special conservation zones for the protection of endemic habitats. Not only terrestial conservation, PTAR also supports the preservation of coastal ecosystems through the creation of a 29-hectare mangrove conservation area in Center Tapanuli and the release of baby turtles in South Tapanuli.

Launch of the 2025 Journalistic Work Competition

Coinciding with the event, PTAR officially launched the 2025 Martabe Gold Mine Journalistic Work Competition, themed “ESG in Action: Sustainable Mining Towards Harmony Society and the Environment.”
