Building Awareness, Strengthening Early Disaster Preparedness

Apr 17, 2026

Awareness of potential disasters is an essential value that should be instilled from an early age, particularly in regions vulnerable to various risks such as earthquakes, floods, and fires. A sound understanding of emergency response measures not only serves as foundational knowledge but also forms part of efforts to build a culture of preparedness and environmental awareness. In response to this need, Agincourt Resources, through its Martabe Goes to School programme, conducted an educational activity entitled “Basic Disaster Response Training” as a contribution to enhancing the preparedness of the younger generation in communities surrounding its operational area.

The activity was held on 17th April 2026 at the hall of SMP Negeri 1 Batang Toru, featuring the Emergency Response Team (ERT) of Agincourt Resources, Erman Riatno and Dewi Hafsah Siregar, as speakers. During the session, the presenters explained fundamental disaster concepts, emergency response procedures, and the importance of remaining calm, alert, and appropriate when facing critical situations such as earthquakes, fires, and floods. A total of 145 students participated in the programme with great enthusiasm.

The Principal of SMP Negeri 1 Batang Toru, Panusunan Harahap, stated that learning the basics of disaster response is highly beneficial for students, as it not only broadens their knowledge but also fosters a sense of care and the ability to support one another within the community. He also emphasised that the students showed a high level of enthusiasm during the session, particularly as the Batang Toru area has previously experienced disaster events, making the material highly relevant and easier for students to understand.
