Medan, 19 May 2024 – PT Agincourt Resources, Martabe Gold Mine operator, announced the 13 winners of the 2024 Journalistic Works Competition themed “Implementation of ESG (Environment, Social & Government) Aspect for Sustainable Mining.” The winners who beat tens of journalists throughout Indonesia get a total amount of money of Rp62 million.
The winner announcement was held on Saturday, 18 May 2024, in Medan, North Sumatra, simultaneously awarding ceremony by the management of PT Agincourt Resources (PTAR) and Chairman of the Press Council Ninik Rahayu.
Director of External Relations at PT Agincourt Resources, Sanny Tjan, said that the 2024 Journalistic Works Competition is expected to become a collaboration event and synergy towards information transparency on sustainable mining that applies ESG aspects. Nowadays, the ESG aspects are essential for mining companies not merely useful for the economy, but also to maintain a balance between economic, environmental, and social welfare.
“This extraordinary achievement is inseparable from the role of the media in informing the public. Congratulations to all journalists who won and for those who have not been lucky, keep your spirits up, there is still the next competition. Let’s continue to provide the best information to the public,” she added.
The Martabe Gold Mine Journalistic Works Competition is one of the few journalistic competitions held by mining companies in Indonesia. 2024 is the seventh year of the Journalistic Works Competition has been held by PTAR.
Senior Manager of Corporate Communications at Agincourt Resources, Katarina Siburian Hardono, explained that the number of journalistic works participating in the 2024 Journalistic Works Competition jumped by 95% compared to last year. These works came from prolific journalists spread across various regions in Indonesia, ranging from North Sumatra, Belitung, Palembang, Jabodetabek, Bandung, Solo, Wonosobo, to Jayapura.

Journalistic works that can be included are all the works that contain useful information to the public, proportionate, educate the public, based on the accuracy of data and facts, and meet journalistic elements. As many as 54% of the journalistic works come from the South Tapanuli and Central Tapanuli region, where the Martabe Gold Mine operates.
“The number of works of the journalists from the Tapanuli region proves that our commitment to hold various media capacity-building programs seriously and consistently since 10 years ago has paid off. The journalists from the Tapanuli region can produce good journalistic works and dare to show off in national-level journalistic competitions,” Katarina said.
Going forward, PTAR is committed to continuing to support the improvement of the quality of the Indonesian press, together with the Press Council which is tasked with protecting press freedom and improving the press life quality, as well as with the organizations and associations under the auspices of the Press Council.
“We hope that our partnership with press organizations and press people will continue to be good, solid, and mutually supportive,” Katarina said.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Press Council, Ninik Rahayu, expressed her appreciation to PTAR for placing the press as a strategic stakeholder.
“The press is an important upholder of democracy. This awarding is part of Agincourt Resources’ appreciation of the press performance and function. We as the Press Council would say thanks to PT Agincourt Resources,” she said.
Ninik reminded the journalists to continue maintaining press freedom in the current digital era. As the upholders of democracy, the press not only provides information and knowledge to public, but also as the social control for the stakeholders on policy-making and policy impact.
Responding to his winning as the first winner, Jhonny Wardin P. Simatupang of medanmerdeka.com expressed his gratitude for winning the Journalistic Works Competition. The work that led him to become the first winner was entitled “Formerly Unemployed, Now 7 Batangtoru Youth Earn Hundreds of Millions from Pallet Waste.”
“This victory is proof of my hard work to produce work that meets the competition criteria, supported by the facts in the field about PTAR’s efforts that have a real impact on society and implement ESG well. Thank you PTAR for always being committed to implement sustainable mining,” said Jhonny.
All works were carefully judged by three independent judges. They are Editor-in-Chief of Kumparan and simultaneously the Chairman of the Editor-in-Chief Forum Management Board Arifin Asydhad, Editor-in-Chief of Kompas.com Wisnu Nugroho, and Lecturer at Dr. Soetomo Press Institute (LPDS) Lestantya R. Baskoro.
