Sengon: A Fast-Growing Tree with Abundant Benefits

Aug 15, 2025

Agincourt Resources remains committed to implementing responsible and sustainable mining practices. One tangible step is the planting of sengon trees (Albizia chinensis or Paraserianthes falcataria) on former mining land. Sengon is known as a fast-growing, environmentally friendly species that offers significant ecological and economic benefits.

Sengon can grow to a height of 7–10 metres in just two to three years. Its rapid growth helps quickly restore greenery to degraded land. Its root system improves soil structure, increases porosity, and naturally adds organic matter.

Another biological advantage is its ability to fix nitrogen through symbiosis with Rhizobium bacteria, which enhances soil fertility without reliance on chemical fertilisers. Economically, sengon wood has high market value and is widely used in the plywood, packaging, and lightweight construction industries.

In post-mining reclamation, sengon acts as a pioneer species that stabilises the soil while initiating ecological succession. Once soil conditions have improved, sengon can be combined with agricultural or horticultural crops through agroforestry systems, providing dual benefits: restoring the environment and creating economic opportunities for local communities.

Studies in Kalimantan and Sumatra have shown that sengon effectively increases green cover, stabilises slopes, and improves soil pH and C-organic content. Furthermore, harvesting sengon wood provides additional income for surrounding communities.

However, challenges such as pest attacks, limited supply of quality seedlings, and postharvest management must be addressed. Technical assistance, the provision of certified seedlings, and the involvement of cooperatives or farmer groups are key to success. With proper management, sengon can serve as a true symbol of environmental restoration and sustainable growth in post-mining areas.
