Science and Collaboration: The Key to Addressing Biodiversity Challenges

Sep 26, 2025

Agincourt Resources is committed to protecting biodiversity as part of its environmental conservation efforts. All initiatives are carried out in a systematic, measurable, science-based, and evaluable manner to ensure their effectiveness.

To strengthen these efforts, Agincourt Resources established the Biodiversity Advisory Panel (BAP), an independent body formed in 2019, consisting of scientists, academics, and conservation practitioners. The panel provides input on biodiversity issues, oversees the company’s operations through a science-based approach, and ensures that activities are conducted in ways that minimise impacts on local ecosystems.

BAP is chaired by leading experts such as Rondang Siregar, Dr Sri Suci Utami Atmoko, Dr Puji Rianti, and Dr Onrizal. Working independently, they focus on preserving ecosystems, protecting endangered native species, and restoring habitats wherever possible.

Although not mandated by government regulation, BAP was initiated by Agincourt Resources as a demonstration of its commitment to environmental sustainability and its particular concern for threatened species such as the Tapanuli orangutan.

BAP’s Point Actions To date, BAP has implemented numerous conservation programmes aimed at reducing environmental impacts, including:

1. Enhancing orangutan habitats by protecting critical conservation areas, mitigating habitat fragmentation caused by road construction, and creating effective corridors to avoid human–orangutan conflict.

2. Enriching habitats with food plants and promoting community-based planting schemes .

3. Educating and raising public awareness to foster a sense of ownership and responsibility for orangutan protection.

4. Promoting alternative livelihoods with local communities to safeguard orangutan habitats and prevent harm or loss.

5. Restoring ecosystems around the mine through collaboration with communities, academics, and professionals.

6. Partnering with Agincourt Resources and other stakeholders on biodiversity monitoring, including the use of camera traps, GIS, scientific data, research stations, and providing input prior to potential expansion.

The role of BAP is vital in guiding the company’s conservation strategy, ensuring it is well-directed and transparent, and based on data rather than assumptions. This model of responsible mining sets an example for others in the industry, demonstrating how environmental and social sustainability can be upheld alongside operational success.
