From Classroom to Action: Nurturing Environmental Awareness from an Early Age

Apr 25, 2026

Learning about nature is no longer limited to theory in the classroom. Students of MTs Negeri 3 Tapanuli Selatan were invited to explore the rich biodiversity of Batang Toru through the Martabe Goes to School programme, while gaining a deeper understanding of the vital role young people play in protecting the environment.

Held on 25th April 2026, the activity involved 40 teachers and 104 students. Two Environmental and Biodiversity Researchers of Agincourt Resources, Fajar Nurdiansyah and Dhirga Putra Pradyansyah, delivered sessions on the biodiversity of the Batang Toru ecosystem, including endemic flora and fauna such as the Tapanuli orangutan, as well as the importance of maintaining environmental balance in a sustainable manner.

In his remarks, Supervisor Education of Agincourt Resources, Laung Lubis, emphasised that young people play a crucial role in environmental conservation. He encouraged students to begin with simple actions, such as maintaining cleanliness, reducing waste, and adopting environmentally friendly habits in their daily lives.

Meanwhile, the Principal of MTs Negeri 3 Tapanuli Selatan, H. Oloan Harahap, S.Pd, expressed his appreciation for the initiative. He noted that education on environmental conservation and biodiversity is highly relevant for students, not only as knowledge but also as a foundation for shaping environmentally responsible character.

Students’ enthusiasm was evident throughout the session. Active participation, strong curiosity, and the many questions raised reflected their interest in the topics discussed. The classroom atmosphere became lively through engaging interactions between students and the speakers.

One of the participants, Nazwa Kholifah, shared that the activity provided new insights into the importance of environmental care. “I now understand how important it is to protect the environment, and I want to start sorting waste at home,” she said.

Similarly, Fauzan expressed that the session was highly beneficial in expanding his understanding of the surrounding environment. “It was very beneficial we now have a better understanding of the natural environment around us,” he remarked.

Ultimately, protecting the environment is not about waiting for big actions, but about small habits that begin today and from these, a sustainable future is built.
